Broken Ankle Takes Down RootsWeb

If you have tried to set up a free website on Rootsweb, or apply for a new mailing list, you will have received the following e-mail from the person who handles all this stuff:

Due to a broken ankle, I will be unable to create new web accounts, new mailing lists, change passwords, transfer accounts, etc. in a timely manner for the next six (6) weeks beginning 10 December 2004 as I'm unable to sit at my regular workstation. Following is text you need to know and follow to get solutions to immediate problems.
First of all, I'm not complaining about a broken ankle. This person can only do what she can do, and I hope she gets better soon. I just find it odd that this mighty new frontier we call "The Internet" can be crippled by a broken ankle. Why isn't there a backup plan? I mean, the folks at Rootsweb did a pretty good job of designing a user-driven website, and did a pretty good job of securing it from hackers.

But they forgot about the broken ankle.

Is it just me, or does this sound too similar to "Achilles Heel" of Greek Mythology? Everything else on Rootsweb seems to be strong. But they left the ankle vulnerable.

Massachusetts Name Change Database

Just about every genealogist will find an ancestor that seemingly was planted on Earth by aliens. That is, there is just no documentation that accounts for that person's birth.

But maybe the reason for this is because that ancestor had changed his or her name. The reasons why someone changes their name are many.

Ancestry.com has had a little known database of court records focusing on name changes that took place in Massachusetts between the years of 1780 and 1892. This database called, "Massachusetts Name Changes, 1780-1892" contains nearly 40,000 records, with each entry giving the original name, the date, and place of person's residence.

Perhaps the biggest reason why a person's name changes is because of marriage. But perusing through this database, I found that many name changes in women are considerably different. For example, here is one of the records:

Date of Decree.: Nov. 4,
Original Name.: Nellie Folger Prouty,*
Name Decreed.: Nellie Eudora Johnson,
Residence.: New Bedford.
The reasons why a woman changes both her middle and last names, could be many. But, if you happen to be tracing an ancestor named Nellie Eudora Johnson, you might want to try searching for Nellie Folger Prouty instead.

If you are having difficulty tracing an ancestor's origins in Massachusetts, you might try giving this database a search. Note: This database requires the purchase of a subscription to Ancestry's "U.S. Records Collection" at $29.95 per quarter.

Behold - A New Concept For Genealogy

New family tree software is in the works that claims to focus on getting your data out, as opposed to getting it in. Entitled, "Behold", it appears to look much different than conventional family tree software according to the screenshots. The author of Behold, Louis Kessler, says the first beta release is scheduled for July of 2005, with the full release scheduled for December 2005.

One of Kessler's primary impetus for creating Behold is to produce better reports. "Too often in genealogy programs, the reports are an afterthought, and only the "standard" ancestor, descendant, and family group reports are available", says Kessler on his website. "To print info on a whole family is often impossible". His software will feature an "Everything Report" which outputs everything in one report, including a Table of Contents, a table-structured family listing, complete details for a single person in a single place, and an integrated name index.

Kessler is currently seeking beta testers.

You can also follow the development of Behold through Kessler's weblog.

Interment.net Now Available via RSS Newsfeed

Interment.netGenealogists can now keep track of the latest cemetery transcriptions published on Interment.net through an RSS newsfeed. The website, which has published transcriptions of tombstones and sexton records from over 8,300 cemeteries around the world, has dropped its mailing list in favor of RSS news delivery.

Details of its RSS newsfeed can be found here: http://www.interment.net/newsfeed.htm

According to Interment.net, the mailing list has become too expensive and too unreliable, with about 50% of the e-mails being undeliverable due to tougher spam filters and bad e-mail addresses.

Note this website also carries announcements of new transcriptions published on Interment.net.

Encyclopedia of Genealogy

One of newest genealogy websites worth visiting is Encyclopedia of Genealogy.

This website contains a large list of words and phrases that you may see during the course of genealogical research, whether online, in books and magazines, and historical documents. Each entry has a definition. According to the website:

The Encyclopedia of Genealogy serves as a compendium of genealogical tools and techniques. It provides reference information about everything in genealogy except people. Look to the Encyclopedia of Genealogy to provide explanations of how to look up your family tree, explanations of terms found in genealogy research, including obsolete medical and legal terms. It will describe locations where records may be found. It also will describe how to research Italian, German, Polish, French-Canadian, Jewish, Black, Indian and other ancestors. In short, the Encyclopedia of Genealogy will serve as your standard genealogy reference manual.
The most interesting facet of Encyclopedia of Genealogy is that it is entirely user-created. It is based on the "wiki" architecture, which allow users to create and edit its content. If you're familiar with Wikipedia, then you're already familiar with Encyclopedia of Genealogy.

The website is operated by Dick Eastman, the author of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter, one of the most widely read publication for genealogy news. At this moment, Eastman is asking for genealogists to visit the new Encyclopedia of Genealogy to add new genealogy terms and definitions.

New Hampshire Makes Birth Parent Search Easier

Effective January 1, 2005, adults born in New Hampshire, but adopted by another family, will be allowed to obtain their original birth certificates. A new law, Senate Bill 335, enacted last Summer, makes it easier for adoptees to learn the identity of their natural parents.

New Hampshire becomes only the fifth state to allow adoptees full access to their birth records, joining Oregon, Alabama, Alaska and Kansas, according to Steve Varnum of the Children's Alliance of New Hampshire. Delaware and Tennessee also allow access, but with some restrictions.

Visit "New Hampshire birth certificates" for information on how to obtain records. For information on birth parent searches visit, "New Hampshire Adoption Registry".

Internet Archive to Build Alternative to Google

The Internet Archive announced earlier this month of its plans to build a new online archive called, "Open-Access Text Archives". This new feature seeks to image and digitize books from several libraries, and make them searchable and readable online.

Interestingly, this announcement came just one day after Google announced its intention to create a similar online digital book archive.

If you're not familiar with Internet Archive, it is one of the largest online archives of digitized materials, ranging from books, photographs, films, and other documents of historical value.

Internet Archive says it already has committed to have over one million books in the Text Archive. Currently over twenty-seven thousand are available right now, and an additional fifty thousand are expected in the first quarter of 2005. Access will be free to everyone.

Among the libraries they are now working with:

  • Carnegie Mellon University and the Million Book Project, USA
  • University of Toronto, Canada
  • Library of Congress American Memory Project
  • McMaster University, Canada
  • University of Ottawa, Canada
  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt
  • Indian Institute of Science, India
  • International Institute of Information Technology, India
  • Zhejiang University, China
  • European Archive, Netherlands
  • Internet Archive, San Francisco USA
The Internet Archive welcomes other libraries and archives to join, by contacting them at: info@archive.org.

Google Groups Adds New Functionality

GoogleIf you're not familiar with "Google Groups" don't feel lost, most folks haven't discovered it either. Earlier this month, Google relaunched it's Groups feature to include new functionality, mainly the ability to create your own groups.

Click here to visit the Beta version of the newly redesigned Google Groups.

Think of Google Groups as similar to Yahoo Groups. But, it's actually significantly different, although, you may not know it. This is because Google has a done great job of making the "Usenet" look look something similar to Yahoo Groups.

The Usenet is actually the oldest form of the Internet still in existence. Born in 1979, it was initially conceived as a network of computers that allow people to post messages and exchange ideas.

But since then, it has expanded globally and is now used by millions of people, though not necessarily through Google. Google doesn't own the Usenet, it just gives you an easy way to access it, and browse its archives of messages.

When Google originally launched "Google Groups" in 2001, it provided basic access to search the Usenet messages, read the messages, and post new messages. But you could not create groups of your own, at least not through Google.

Now, Google has added the ability to create your own "Google Group", however, any you group you create is not technically a "Usenet Group". That is, any groups created through Google do not actually become Usenet groups, they are instead groups located solely on Google's servers.

But the beauty of being able to create your own groups, is that you can devote a group solely to a specific surname study. Or, you can create a group just to discuss history and genealogy in a specific county or state.

Don't Park Granny on the Sofa

This little research piece comes courtesy of Friends Reunited, the owner of GenesConnected.co.uk, a genealogy website, revealing that people know very little about their grandparents:

An appeal not to park elderly relatives alone on the sofa this Christmas has gone out from Friends Reunited. Families are being urged to positively encourage grandparents to reminisce about the "good old days" after the turkey and mince pies!

The appeal follows new research for the website's family history service Genes Reunited that reveals only 1% of people in Britain can name all eight of their great grandparents. More than a third can"t name any of them.

Even more (60.1%) have no idea what any of them did for a living. And a third (33.1%) don't know where any of them lived.

Yet 96 per cent of the people surveyed say that knowing their family tree is "important" to them.

Steve Pankhurst, founder of Genes Reunited, said: "Please don't park your granny in a corner with a glass of sherry this Christmas. Ask her to help fill in your family tree instead.

"Many of us reach for the TV volume control when our grandparents start to reminisce about the good old days. But given time, I promise, you'll wish you'd paid more attention.

"Sorry to be depressing, but some half a million British people over 65 will not be around this time next year. And if they don't pass on the most basic facts about their parents and grandparents, it will put years on other families" efforts to trace their histories."

Genes Reunited has become the biggest family history site in the UK. It links different families" histories together in the same way as Friends Reunited connects old school friends.

Anthony Adolph, an expert genealogist who has studied family ancestry for over fifteen years, explained: "Tracing family history is usually a laborious and frustrating process. But if enough people enter what information they know about their families into internet sites, before long all our connections will join up.

"It"ll be genealogy's version of turning on the Christmas tree lights."

Last year, thanks to family gatherings, Christmas Day and Boxing Day proved the most popular days of the year for additions to family trees on the Genes Reunited website.

Christmas research

More than 1,800 UK adults between 18 and 66-plus were surveyed in the first week of December to find out how much people know about their eight great grandparents.

The research revealed that:

  • 36.8% can't name any
  • 53.9% can only name one
  • 1.5% can name all eight
  • 60.1% don't know what any of them did for a living
  • 76.2% only know what one of them did for a living
  • 33.1% don't know where any of the four sets lived
  • 54% only know where one of the four sets lived
Adolph commented: "The responses are remarkably consistent throughout the age ranges. People over 65, who you'd think would be more knowledgeable, don't appear to know significantly more than 18 year olds about their respective great grandparents.

"Mind you, there's a case for saying that 18 year olds should know more as their great grandparents would have been around more recently."

To help families start their family trees Genes Reunited has created a printable tree specifically for use over Christmas. It's even more fun than Monopoly and can be downloaded at www.genesreunited.co.uk

    USA Geography Game

American genealogists need to know the geographic locations of all 50 states, because American history is filled with migration and western expansion. Over the decades, expanses of territories have been divied up into smaller states, requiring genealogists to memorize when and where state boundaries were defined.

Think you're up for a challenge? Then try this online geography game called, "Place the States".

You are given a randomly chosen state, and you must drag and drop it onto an outline of the United States. Your score depends on how precise you are able to place the state in the correct location.

On my first try, I scored 96%, with an Average Error of 5 miles, and a time of 357 seconds. Think you can do better?

Wisconsin Historical Society Puts Documents Online

If you are tracing ancestry through Wisconsin, you may be interested in browsing a new feature from the Wisconsin Historical Society entitled, "Turning Points" at: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/turningpoints/

Turning Points was announced on November 29, 2004, as an online archive of imaged documents pertinent to Wisconsin history, including original letters, photographs, rare books, diaries, newspaper articles, museum artifacts, and maps relating to 50 pivotal historical events.

Having visited the website, I found lots of valuable genealogical materials, such as journals, diaries, and biographies. Each week it seems the Society is posting new stuff. There is a search engine so that you can find items by name or keyword. For those of you with strong ties to Wisconsin, you'll probably want to bookmark this website and review the newest postings each week.
