The Genographic Project - Mapping your genetic heritage
If you have an extra 100 bucks lying around and want to have some fun, check out the Genographic Project sponsored by National Geographic and IBM. The project hopes to collect gene samples from 100,000 people worldwide that may reveal patterns in their DNA by comparing them to "isolated, indigenous populations" - ones who who have the clearest lines of descent. The kit shows you how to gather and mail in a sample. Then all you have to do is check out a web site to see what routes your ancestors might have taken. Aside from any serious genealogy business, this might be just plain fun. Instead of buying everyone in your family a $10 gift certificate next Christmas, maybe you could hand them a migratory map of some sort. I'm sure they'll enjoy it.
