Library Dust
Michael McGrorty, the blogger behind "Library Dust" is creating a list of endangered libraries. So far, there are four library systems listed, and it's interesting to note that the reasons are all having to do with shortfall of available funds. In many cases, ballot initiatives to raise taxes for libraries are being voted down. For whatever the reasons, voters are not seeing public libraries as important enough to warrant higher taxes. Could it be that taxes are too high as it is? Could it be that people are finding the Internet as adequate for research? Could it be that people have less time to visit libraries? It's probably all of the above. I certainly don't want to see libraries turn to dust. But I think the old model of having local governments manage and fund libraries is coming to an end. Instead, I would like to see private organizations step up to create collections that they take an interest in. Historical societies already do this. How about helping our local churches do this too? How about helping local Chambers of Commerce create business libraries? I would like to see our lawmakers create legislation that removes whatever roadblocks that make it difficult for these organizatiosn to do so.
Using DNA to Identify Tsunami Victims
Sorenson Genomics issued a press release this morning announcing that it is helping the people of Thailand to identify their deceased. They create DNA profiles of the most badly decomposed bodies using tissue samples. Then, they create similar DNA profiles from living family members. By comparing similarities in the profiles, they can reasonably determine which body belongs to which family. You might know Sorenson Genomics through a couple of its subsidiary companies, Relative Genetics, which assists genealogists in validating family pedigrees, and GeneTree, which offers paternity testing. Apparently, the demand for accurate DNA analysis is reaching a new level of urgency after the Thai government instituted a death benefit of $1,000 for surviving family members of each victim. In order to claim the death benefit and to perform traditional Buddhist last rites for the victims, family members need to demonstrate a genetic relationship with the victim.

NARA Guidance on Managing Web Records
The National Archives and Records Administration released new guidelines on managing records on the Internet. The guidelines were intended for government agencies, but they might provide some tips for any website publisher in general. For example: 1.2 How can I maintain a trustworthy web site?
For web site records to have integrity and remain reliable, authentic, and useable for as long as they are needed, you must maintain the content, context, and sometimes structure of the site. A trustworthy web site includes not only the content pages but also information about the web site that relates to the context in which it was created and used. Specific contextual information varies depending upon the business, legal, and regulatory requirements of the business activity. Structural information on the organization of the web site supports its long-term integrity. Huh?? If you think this is for you, enjoy.

GenWeekly - Update (Jan 27, 2005)
Library of Congress Seeks Public Comments on Orphaned Works
The Library of Congress today issued a public notice asking for comments regarding orphaned works. Orphaned works are considered to be those in which copyright protections theoretically remain in force, but in which the copyright holder cannot be contacted. The Copyright Office seeks to examine the issues raised by "orphan works," i.e., copyrighted works whose owners are difficult or even impossible to locate. Concerns have been raised that the uncertainty surrounding ownership of such works might needlessly discourage subsequent creators and users from incorporating such works in new creative efforts or making such works available to the public. This notice requests written comments from all interested parties. Specifically, the Office is seeking comments on whether there are compelling concerns raised by orphan works that merit a legislative, regulatory or other solution, and what type of solution could effectively address these concerns without conflicting with the legitimate interests of authors and right holders. Comments must be submitted in writing. You can e-mail your comments to: orphanworks@loc.gov. Comments must be received by March 25, 2005. Dick Eastman blogged about the issue of orphaned works earlier this month. There are several old works that could be of value to genealogists, but they cannot be republished because the copyright holder cannot be contacted. Moreover, republishing these works can generate taxable revenues for the government. Seems like this is a win-win situation waiting to happen.

Using GOONS To Research
It has been quite a while since I last visited the web site of The Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS). The site typically offered very little and was almost exclusively a billboard providing information about how to contact its members so you could send them your information. According to several people who e-mailed me years ago, the members typically did not share information so the GOONS site was kind of a one-way, dead-end street. I just paid a visit to the site and was pleased to see that it has changed a bit and now offers some information via its online records section. Please don't misunderstand me, there really is very little here but none of it is findable via typical search engine queries because of the way the site is designed. My reason for mentioning GOONS is twofold. First of all, I know I often stop visiting certain web sites because they don't offer very much to me at a given point in time. It is a mistake to ignore an otherwise good site from that point on because many sites add information regularly or change their focus to provide more information. It pays to visit your old favorites and see if there is anything new there. Also, I often forget that information is not always reachable by the search engines. For example, much of the USGenWeb Archives is not indexed and therefore, reachable via the search engines. Another site I know is very large and continually adds information, very little of which is ever indexed by Google or others. So don't do the lazy thing and limit yourself to the search engines. Do yourself a favor and pay GOONS and some of your old favorite sites a visit. You may just find something you're looking for!

Libraries with WiFi Hot Spots
Wireless Librarian is the name of a website that provides a listing of libraries, public and private, that maintain their own wireless networks. A "wireless network" generally means free Internet access to those with laptops and handheld computers capable of accessing the Internet without the use of cables and plugs. If you bought a laptop computer in the last year or two, chances are your laptop is capable of connecting to a wireless network. Being able to connect to a wireless network means you can use the Internet on your own computer with no cables to trip over. Perhaps someday all libraries and archives will have free wireless Internet access. Then we can all bring our laptops and handheld computers and be able to access websites and online databases as we conduct our research. Imagine being able to go to a library, pull out a book of marriage records, and transcribe the records into your laptop, and upload the information to an Internet database?
Labrador and Newfoundland Archives Charges Entrance Fees
Paul Shelley, the Culture Minister for Labrador and Newfoundland announced last week that effective June 29, 2005, visitors to the Provincial Archives will have to pay a fee to enter it. The Archives was moved to a new cultural center known as, "The Rooms". The Rooms will house the Provincial Museum, the Archives, and the Art Gallery. Anyone wanting to enter The Rooms must pay an entrance fee. Previously, the Archives did not require an entrance fee. Mary Ellen Wright of the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives is appalled at the notion that people now must pay a fee just to enter the Archives: "People have a right to look at their records. They have a right to have access to the things that pertain to them, to their history, to their culture, without having to pay money to do so." But Priscilla Renouf, who chairs the board that operates the $50-million complex, says a fee is necessary to cover operating and maintenance costs. The Rooms had been scheduled to open last year, but the government delayed the opening to save money.

New Surname Law in France
Effective January 1, 2005, a new law took place in France that abolished the old requirement that babies take their father's surname. As of now, parents have a choice of giving their child the father's surname or the mother's maiden name. The change was brought about largely because so many children in France are now being born out of wedlock, as many as 45%, according to the article linked above. Hence, the old law seemed out of place with the times. On other hand, the change will also allow families protect the "family name". In aristocratic families that produced only female offspring, no longer will they have to worry about their name dying out, as mothers can now pass their surnames to their daughters.

The Irish in America
With St. Patrick's Day coming up in a couple of months, the U.S. Census Bureau today released some statistics on Irish ancestry in America: - 34 million U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry. This number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (3.9 million). Irish is the nation's second most frequently reported ancestry, trailing only German.
- 24% of Massachusetts residents are of Irish ancestry, about double the national percentage.
- There are 3 states in which Irish is the leading ancestry group: Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Irish is among the top five ancestries in every state but two (Hawaii and New Mexico).
- There are 54 counties where Irish is the largest observed ancestry group. 44 of these counties are in the Northeast, with 14 in New York, 11 in Massachusetts and 5 in New Jersey.
- 348,978 residents of Middlesex County, MA are of Irish ancestry. Among the 54 counties where Irish is the largest observed ancestry group, Middlesex had the highest population of Irish-Americans, with Norfolk County, Mass., second, with 203,285.
- 31% of the population of Plymouth County, Mass., and Norfolk County, Mass., are of Irish ancestry. Among the 54 counties where Irish is the largest observed ancestry group, these two counties had the highest rate.
- There are 148,000 foreign-born U.S. residents born in Ireland.
- There are 4.8 million immigrants from Ireland admitted for lawful permanent residence since fiscal year 1820, the earliest year for which official immigration records exist. By fiscal year 1870, about half of these immigrants were admitted for lawful permanent residence. Only Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Mexico have had more immigrants admitted for permanent residence to the United States than Ireland.
- There are 1,010 immigrants from Ireland admitted for lawful permanent residence to the United States in the 2003 fiscal year.
- There were $23.0 billion worth of imports from the Republic of Ireland during a recent 10-month period (January-October 2004). Meanwhile, the United States exported $6.6 billion worth of goods to Ireland.
- There are 4 places in the United States named Shamrock, the floral emblem of Ireland. Mount Gay-Shamrock, W.Va., and Shamrock, Texas, were the most populous, with 2,623 and 1,828 residents, respectively. Shamrock Lakes, Ind., had 164 residents and Shamrock, Okla., 126. (Figure for Mount Gay-Shamrock is a Census 2000 count; the other figures in this paragraph are 2003 estimates.)
- There are 9 places in the United States that share the name of Ireland's capital, Dublin. Since Census 2000, Dublin, Calif., has surpassed Dublin, Ohio, as the most populous of these places (35,581 compared with 33,606 as of July 1, 2003).
- 22 gallons of beer is consumed per capita by Americans annually. On St. Patrick's Day, some drinking establishments offer green-dyed beer to their thirsty patrons.
- There were 376 breweries in 2002, down from 529 in 1997. These figures do not count microbreweries or brewpubs that serve customers on the premises. While California had the highest number of breweries (55), Colorado had the largest number of brewery employees, with more than 5,000.
Genealogy Suggest Interface
Micah Dubinko, a self-described "XML and Xforms Geek" is interested in working with someone who runs a genealogy website to experiment with creating a genealogy search word suggestion tool. If you've ever used Google's new " Search Suggest Tool", you'll know what Micah is talking about. As you enter a word to search for, Google displays a list of matching keywords, while you are typing, and lists out the number of times that keyword was searched. He's looking for genealogy sites that have their own on-site search engine. Contact him at his website.
Delicious Library - Home Based Lending Library
If you have accumulated a large number of genealogy and history books over the years, and now find that you don't refer back them as often as you used to, how would you like to join a network of home-based libraries willing to lend out books to researchers all over the country? Well, a software company based in Seattle, Washington is developing software that will set up a network of home-based libraries for the purpose of doing just that. The company is called Delicious Monster, and their software is called, "Delicious Library". Right now, Delicious Library works as a cataloguing tool for books, videos and music. However, the company is busy working on a new version of the software that will enable the creation of networked home-based lending libraries. Delicious Library is now a cataloging program, appealing to those with an obsessive, Nick Hornby-esque desire to catalog every song, book and movie on their living room shelves.
But from the start, the software was planned to be social, allowing friends, neighbors and colleagues to see what's in each others' media libraries, and turn collections into personal lending libraries.
Version two, due later this year, will allow users to browse each other's libraries. It will be location-aware, letting users know who has what in their neighborhood or city. This really could have great potential in the field of genealogy. You would be able to run a search for "anderson genealogy" and be able to find people across the country with matching books, microfilms, or CD-ROMs.

"Mohammed" is Now a Popular Baby Name in UK
An interesting article in the Christian Science Monitor reports that the most popular names that mothers in the United Kingdom are giving to their babies are changing dramatically. Among some of the highlights from this article: - "David" is no longer in the top 50 names
- "Mohammed" is now the fifth the most popular baby boy's name
- "Jane", "Mary", and "Margaret" are no longer in the top 100
- "Peter" and "Paul" are no longer in the top 100
The article cites a trend to hang on to names that reflect moral values, but people want something unique: Experts point to a number of reasons for the trend. They say parents still want names that express solid moral and spiritual values, perhaps because of the uncertainty of the times. But they also want uniqueness, bringing in a whole new slate of names to challenge perennial favorites.

Seattle Public Library to Incorporate RSS Technology
The Seattle Public Library (SPL) announced yesterday that it will replace its computer catalog with a new system called, "Horizon" this February 23. Among the features of this new system is RSS technology. Just as websites like CousinConnect are using RSS to syndicate its content to several online news outlets, the SPL will use RSS to syndicate headlines of new book titles. You will be able to monitor new books at the SPL through your favorite newsreader or through newsfeed portals like My Yahoo and Bloglines. We continue to see great ideas on how RSS technology can be put to use in genealogy. I'd like to see some genealogical and historical societies step up to the plate and do something similar to what the SPL is doing.

"Who's Your Daddy" Creates a Flood of Requests
Steven J. Weisz, the CEO of ReuniteToday.com, the Private Investigations firm behind the controversial Fox show, "Who's Your Daddy" spoke at a press conference today to discuss the flood of letters pouring into his company offices. "In short, we got slammed!" said Weisz. "Since the airing of Who's Your Daddy on January 3rd, my email box has been jammed with hundreds of letters from around the world." Weisz reported that some of the e-mails were negative and that the most of the negative ones seem to come from organized adoption groups. However, Weisz noted that the majority of letters were positive. More than 2,000 letters came from people wanting to reunite with lost loved ones. "There seems to be a tremendous need for people to locate and reunite with missing family," said Weisz. "I think there is a possibility for a great deal of good to come out of Who's Your Daddy and shows like it."

Family Forest Lists Descendants of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Philip II of England
Millisecond Publishing, the makers of Family Forest, have published a list of several famous descendants of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her husband King Philip II of England. Both Eleanor and King Philip were the subject of the 1968 movie, "Lion in Winter". The movie is an historical account of the relationship between Eleanor of Aquitane and King Philip II of England. King Philip ruled England during the 12th Century. The marriage of Eleanor and King Philip produced nine children. However, Eleanor had been previously married to King Louis VII of France, and produced two children. The list of famous descendants includes well known persons such as Audrey Hepburn (22nd great-granddaughter), Brigham Young (20th great-grandson), Gov. Howard Dean (21st great grandson), Walt Disney (22nd great-grandson), and President George W. Bush (24th great-grandson). By creating this list of famous descendants, Millesecond Publishing demonstrates the ability of Family Forest to trace the ancestry of famous people today to famous people of centuries ago. Family Forest is a database on CD-ROM that maps out ancestral pathways of prominent people, using facts from hundreds of well-documented and published sources.
Using Search Engines - Don't Forget about Yahoo!
For many family history researchers, the discovery of Google was a watershed event. Prior to the search engine's creation, performing in depth research was a rather complicated mess of trying various searches in each of many engines. Yahoo was perhaps the best of what was available before Google. AltaVista was pretty good especially if you were willing to dig through piles and piles of results. Other engines often delivered results available on neither of these two. So frequently, if you didn't find what you were looking for on one engine, you might get lucky and find it on another. Google simplified the process quite a bit because it spidered so many sites and delivered most, if not all, of the relevant results in just a couple pages. Google's original search algorithms ranked the "hits" from a search in such a manner that most of the good and relevant sites appeared in the first couple of pages. I'm not sure that is always true these days. The problem is that website developers have become more and more aware of what they have to do to stay in the top results on Google. Whole stables of sites have been developed to catch keyword searches and grab visitors to push into large commercial sites that charge fees for their services. Google has tried to combat this trend by changing their algorithm time after time to keep these nefarious website developers on their toes. The result is a search performed a year ago might return completely different results today, and those results may not be nearly as relevant. Also, when Google went public last year, most of the criticism lobbed at the company was targeted at it having too few revenue sources. To their credit, Google has worked hard at diversifying but this does little to improve search. Acquisitions and new services may make Google more attractive to investors but they do nothing to help you find where your great aunt is interred. Some time ago, Yahoo revised its search technology to compete better with Google. At first the results were pretty good but were never "better" than those found on Google. No additional resources were generated. I got into the habit of going only to Google and giving up on my search if I didn;t find anything. Lately I have become increasingly dissatisfied with searches for both genealogy and non-genealogy related items on Google. Every once in a while I'll try the same search on Yahoo and it seems as if the results are improving. My point is that, while search engines are one of the best resources and Google certainly made the experience better, don't forget about Yahoo and other engines. It is difficult and time consuming to search through multiple engines, but you may just find what you were looking for.

American Community Survey
If you happen to receive a census form in the mail during the next few days consider yourself 1 out of 40 lucky households to get one. The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that it has begun mailing out census forms to some 250,000 households across the United States in what it claims will replace future decennial censuses. Each month, the U.S. Census Bureau will mail out census forms to randomly selected households in an attempt to create more timely statistics on America's population. This new type of survey is called, " American Community Survey" (ACS). According to the U.S. Census Bureau: In development and testing since 1996, the ACS currently produces data for areas with populations of 250,000 or more. This week's mail-out of questionnaires expands the survey from 1,239 counties to all of the nation's 3,142 counties, as well as Puerto Rico, American Indian reservations, Alaska native villages and Hawaiian homelands.
The Census Bureau will release data for areas with populations of 65,000 or more annually beginning in summer 2006. For smaller areas, it will take three or five years, depending on their population size, to accumulate a large enough sample to produce data. Once those data are collected, though, the Census Bureau will release tabulations based on rolling three-year averages annually for areas with populations between 20,000 and 65,000, and rolling five-year averages annually for areas as small as census tracts. As to what this means for future genealogists is uncertain. It could very well be that genealogists will no longer to be able to count on finding their ancestors in the U.S. Census, if census forms are mailed out to randomly selected households.

Three Scottish Archives to Create Super Database
The Sunday Herald reports that three of Scotland's largest archives will collaborate to create a giant digital archive of genealogical records along with a "one-stop" personal history center. The National Archives of Scotland, the Court of the Lord Lyon, and a family history website, Scotland's People, have pledged to work together to give family historians researching Scottish roots greater tools to discover their ancestry. Fi Harris, a consultant for specialist body Scotland Online, who is working on the project, said: “It is going to be giving a greater insight into Scottish history, and will make it more accessible. The centre will not be open until 2006, but our initial step is to create the new [extended] Scotland’s People website, amalgamating it with 500,000 records from the Scottish Archives and Court of the Lord Lyon." The new service will offer access to images of Scottish statutory registers of births, marriages and deaths, from 1855 to 1903, 1928 and 1953 respectively. There will be census records and old parish registers going back as far as 1553, indexes and images of Scottish wills and testaments from 1500-1901, as well as records of both the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Scotland.
Beavis Lake Gets Renamed to Butthead Lake
The AP reports today that someone at the U.S. Census bureau renamed a lake to "Butthead Lake". The lake was previously named, "Beavis Lake". Someone at the Census Bureau must have gotten bored and made a joke out of naming the lake, said Ken Brown, a land surveyor with the state Department of Natural Resources.

San Luis Obispo County Libraries Closed on Mondays
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that San Luis Obispo County libraries have been forced to close their doors on Mondays. The reduced hours, however, is not the result of reduced demand, but lack of money. Interestingly, the reporter of the article quoted a patron who states: "You can do a lot on the Internet," she said, "but you can't replace a book in your hand." I agree there's nothing like the form factor of paper. But what exactly does the Internet have to do with shrinking government budgets? Voters in the California county were asked to approve Measure L, an initiative that would have raised sales taxes for libraries. But the measure did not pass. The question of whether or not governments should be in the library business is one issue. But this reinforces the fact that the biggest threat to libraries is inadequate funding. If libraries are forced to reduce their hours even further, people will have little option to but to get their materials from the Internet. The sad thing is that this will cause librarians to reinforce the myth that computers are putting them out of work.
Welcome to the Googlezon
"I'm talking about the future, Mr. Gittes!" - Noah Cross, Chinatown (1974) Yesterday I wrote about the paranoia over libraries succumbing to the onslaught of digital media. Today, a very interesting documentary is being blogged that chronicles the history of media on the Internet and takes us into the future all the way to 2014. Watch the video on the Internet here: http://www.broom.org/epic/ols-master.htmlOne of the reasons why Dave and I started this blog is because it became apparent to us that "news" is the wave of the future. When I say "news" I don't mean about what's happening in Washington D.C., what Dan Rather has to say, or what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. I'm talking about the delivery of new information that matches a user's specifications. This video reflects my feelings exactly. Though, I'm not suggesting that Google will indeed purchase Amazon.com, or that the New York Times will sue Google. But if you take a look at your lives right now, you have set up "information delivery" all around you. It's just that right now, all of this information is not connected, and is not controllable from a single place. If you have a newsreader, you have news delivered to your computer. If your mobile phone has a camera, chances are you have web space somewhere where you can transmit photos to. If you do a lot of shopping on Amazon.com, chances are you have them e-mailing you books that you might be interested in. If you're a genealogist, chances are there is a Rootsweb mailing list sending messages to you. Moving forward into the future, our lives will be centered more with having filtered information delivered to us. That's where blogs are going. As a blogger it's my job to filter information in a way that is desirable to genealogists, and present it here. But in the future, more of my writings will reach you via RSS newsfeed. Thus bloggers are information filters. Bloggers who capture the most information, and filter it in the most desirable way, will enjoy the greatest success. How does this apply to genealogy? Genealogy is a perfect fit for this. Genealogists are interested in vast amounts of information. Genealogy is, in fact, the study of information, but for a specific goal. Recently, CousinConnect.com announced its support for RSS newsfeeds. You can create an RSS newsfeed that delivers only genealogy queries matching a specific region or surname, and even tailor it by soundex matching or with wildcards. This is an example of taking large amounts of raw genealogy information, filtering it to meet your specifications, and delivering it to your desktop. Imagine all genealogy websites delivering filtered information to your desktop. That's the future of the Internet.

Ships Passenger Lists from Holland to New York Online
Olive Tree Genealogy announced today a new project to reconstruct ships passenger lists for ships from Holland (Netherlands) to New York (formerly known as "New Netherlands") before 1664. Here is what Lorine McGinnis Schulze, the publisher of Olive Tree Genealogy had to say: All "passenger lists" for travel from the Netherlands (Holland) to New Netherland (present day New York) between 1654 and 1664 came from the debit side of the West India Company Account Book. This account book showing who owed money when they arrived is the source for previously published lists of passengers to New Netherland/New York.
Thus we do not have complete passenger lists for this time period. Many of the previously published lists are flawed. Many names of those who sailed are not found, as they paid their passage money ahead of time.
In some cases, I've been able to reconstruct names for a ship list that has never been published before! In other cases, I've been able to add names to previously published lists.
I reconstructed the names of those sailing on various ships from several primary sources. Please note that not every source was used to reconstruct every ship. I have indicated which sources were used for each individual. The full list of 82 ships and names of passengers on these ships sailing to New York from 1624 to 1664 is found at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/ships/

The Effects of the Internet on Library Patronage
The University of Buffalo School of Informatics will launch a study to determine what effects the Internet has made on the use of libraries. This will actually be their second such study. Their first study five years ago showed that it had no effects, negative or positive. Librarians seem to have this fascination with computers and the Internet, but in a pessimistic way. There is this myth that computers will eventually put them out of work. Have any of you seen that movie, "Desk Set", where Katherine Hepburn is the librarian and Spencer Tracy is there to install a new computer? It's just like that. If libraries are ever to become obsolete, it won't be the result of computers or the Internet. It will be for other reasons, primarily lack of adequate funding. I used to work at a public library while going through college. For one thing, ours was one of the most difficult libraries to get into, mainly because there was no place to park your car. The library was located in downtown, next to City Hall, and next to the County Courthouse. I heard patrons complain of having to park a half-mile away, and hoofing it in. Where I live, the County usually builds a new library about once every year. But these are all small libraries. I believe the County builds only small libraries just to handle the most popular items, namely childrens books, contemporary fiction, and New York Times bestsellers. You can't do any research in these libraries, but they do cut down on costs. One of the biggest reasons why library patronage might go down is because more libraries have implemented rules restricting circulation to only local residents. That is, if I visit a library in another town, I can't check out their books because I don't live in that town. This is being done because a lot of patrons don't return books back to the library. Cities and counties can only levy taxes on their residents, hence they are circulating books only to their residents. Another reason is lack of hours. In the library I used to work at, it was one of the few that opened on Sundays. But since then they are now closed on Sundays. Lack of funding has forced them reduce their hours. Many folks can only visit libraries on weekends and evenings. As these library hours are reduced, people simply can't get into libraries. Computers and the Internet do not replace libraries. They are merely new mediums by which information is available. If this new study finds that fewer people are visiting libraries, I would start by following the money.
CIVIL WAR MAPMAKING
A new Library of Congress online collection could let you trace your Civil War ancestor's footsteps into battle or see whether soldiers dug trenches on his farm. The Library of Congress (http://www.loc.gov), Virginia Historical Society (http://www.vahistorical.org) and Library of Virginia (http://www.lva.lib.va.us) have teamed up to post nearly 3,000 Civil War maps, charts, atlases and sketchbooks at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/collections/civil_war_maps. Union forces or northern commercial firms prepared most of the maps in the Library of Congress collection. They depict battles and engagements, troop positions and movements, and fortifications. The Virginia Historical Society's online collection includes Army Engineer Corps maps of Virginia that not only detail roads, bridges, waterways and major buildings, but also identify farms and plantations by the owners' names. In addition, you'll find images from the diary and scrapbook of Robert K. Sneden, an Army of the Potomac private who served as a mapmaker, consist primarily of battle plans and fortification details. The Library of Virginia contributed 200 maps to the new site. Some accompanied reports to the governor of Virginia; others include Confederate imprints, printed and manuscript maps of areas in Virginia, and field maps of southwestern Virginia. You can search the collection or browse by title, subject, place or creator. To view an image, zoom in and click to navigate, or, if you have the MrSid plug-in, download the whole thing. The Proceedings of the Old Bailey
Now here is a website worth visiting, " The Proceedings of the Old Bailey". It is an online database of over 100,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court, between the period of 1674 to 1834. The text contained in this database comes from old publications, known as "proceedings", dating as early as 1674. Originally, these were meant to provide entertainment, describing the lives and exploits of criminals. It's kind of like watching "COPS" on television. As the years went by, the proceedings became more objective, and took on a new purpose, to inform, rather than to entertain. You can search the database by a variety of criteria, name, keyword, crime, etc. In addition to seeing the text of each trial, you also get to see the scanned image of the page which the trial appears. Really cool. I ran a search of one of my wife's ancestral lines, the Lawman family. I got back 3 results. I looked at one of them for Peter Lawman. Here's what it had to say: Peter Lawman of the Parish of St. Mary Islington, was Indicted for Felony; for that he, being above the Age of 14 years, was seen to wander up and down, calling himself an Egyptian, from the 10th day of June last, to the 12th of June following. The Prisoner alledged for himself that he was a German, and no Egyptian; nor that he did say at any time he was an Egyptian; but the Evidence for the King being very positive against him, the Jury brought him in guilty of Felony.

No images. U.S. Census Images & Indexes - Note from Mike Mansfield in development: Today we rolled live the final pieces of the AIS Depublishing Project on Ancestry.com. It is a rare occasion when we get to celebrate the replacement and removal of over 50 million records from the site. However, the completion of this project, which we were legally bound to have complete by the end of this year, will save us significant royalty payments. As well, our internally created census indexes are: 1- higher quality, 2- every-name indexes (1850 & 1860), and 3- linked to J2Ks instead of Mr SID images (1900 & 1920 only remain linked to Mr SID images today). The result is a better user experience in both our indexes and image collections for subscribers to these datasets.
This project began almost two years ago when we started creating our own early US Federal Census indexes (1800 – 1860) to replace the same AIS indexes that have been on the site for many years. Obviously a lot of work has occurred over the past two years to get us here today and many people in the organization deserve congratulations. The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark
If you are interested in recipes of early America, then you'll probably want to pick up a copy of Mary Gunderson's book, " The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark". Gunderson extracts facts and recipes found in the actual journals of Lewis and Clark and recreates them in this book. I've read the journals of Lewis and Clark and they are indeed one of the treasures of American Literature. Meriwether Lewis, the educated military captain from Virginia, and William Clark, the self-taught frontiersman, probably had a lot of opinions on each other's culinary tastes. It would be very interesting to see the kinds of foods these people ate throughout their journey. Mary Gunderson is a nationally-noted food writer, lecturer, and culinary historian. She’s a graduate of Iowa State University where she majored in journalism with an emphasis in food and nutrition. Her book, "The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark" won a Ben Franklin Award in 2004.
Settlers of Maryland 1679-1783
The Advocate, a newspaper in Baton Rouge, LA, offers a review of a genealogy book entitled, "Settlers of Maryland 1679-1783" on its website. The book, which is available from Genealogical Publishing Company, is actually a re-release from another series of books called, "Early Settlers of Maryland, 1633-1680", a five volume set, which came out in 1996. But demand for the previous set was so high, that all available copies sold out fast. Instead of re-printing all five sets, they were consolidated into one book, with new material added, taking the time period to after the Revolutionary war. The book costs $75.00 is available from Genealogical Publishing Company.

CousinConnect Adds Custom RSS Feeds
CousinConnect.com, a leading online genealogy query website, is the latest to add RSS newsfeed support. Everytime your RSS newsreader synchronizes with its newsfeed, it will pull in the latest genealogy queries. Instead of visiting CousinConnect to see the latest queries, you can have them delivered to your RSS newsreader. What makes CousinConnect's RSS feeds different from the others is that it allows you to create customized feeds. You can elect to receive only those queries for a specific surname, or only those associated with a specific country, state, or county, or even those with a combination of the two. CousinConnect is the first genealogy website to offer customized feeds. To create a customized feed, go to CousinConnect's homepage, and either search for a surname, or navigate down to a desired country, state, or county. Look to the far-right column (you might need to scroll down a little). You will see a link entitled, "RSS this search". Click that link, it will display your customized newsfeed. To get a newsfeed customized for a specific surname AND geographical region, first navigate down to a desired country, state, or county, and then conduct a surname search from there. You can even get a surname newsfeed using Soundex Matching, by going to CousinConnect's Advanced Search page. Basically, any search parameters entered into CousinConnect will yield an accompanying RSS newsfeed URL. CousinConnect's RSS newsfeeds are assembled on the fly whenever a newsfeed URL is requested, thus no RSS files are stored on the server, making it possible to create millions and millions of customized feeds. "We hope that our new RSS feeds will help genealogists get more answers to their queries, much more quickly", says Sheila Ruth, the programmer behind CousinConnect. "That's the goal of CousinConnect, to be the most effective genealogy query website".

Vatican Letter Sheds Light on Origins of WWII Catholic Orphans
Reuters reported today of an interesting revelation for researchers of Jewish and Catholic ancestry. An historian named Alberto Melloni unearthed a letter from Pope Pius XII dated in 1946, containing orders for the church in France not to return Jewish children to their parents. During World War II, Jewish families brought their children to Catholic Churches for protection. The children were baptized as Catholics as an attempt to protect them from Nazis. However, the letter from Pope Pius XII gave instructions not to return the children to their parents. According to the letter: "Children who have been baptized cannot be entrusted to institutions that do not know how to ensure a Christian education," read the letter, written by the Vatican's doctrinal department. To address requests from Jewish parents on the whereabouts of their children, the letter advises: "Avoid, as far as possible, responding in writing to the Jewish authorities, but do so orally," it said. Jewish groups have accused Pope Pius XII, pontiff from 1939 to 1958, of not doing enough to stop the Holocaust or to help Jews escape it. Read the full article at The Boston Globe for the whole story.
