FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ARCHIVES MAY BE HISTORY
Archivists are trying to keep a line item in President Bush's proposed 2006 budget from making fewer historical records available to you in the future. According to a National Archives and Records Administration press release, "the President's budget also recommends an end to all grant funding and staff support for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC)." NHPRC, an arm of NARA that makes grants for preserving and publishing historical records, has awarded $153 million to 4,000 state and local government archives, colleges and universities, and individuals over the past 40 years. The money has supported projects to publish papers of notables such as John Adams, George Washington and Eleanor Roosevelt;improve your access to collections such as the Nevada Women's Archives (http://www.library.unr.edu/specoll/womarchp.html) and help states preserve their electronic records. See a list of NHPRC-funded project at http://www.archives.gov/grants/funded_endorsed_projects/funded_endorsed_projects.html Even if the proposed budget passes unchanged, NHPRC will continue to fund multiple-year grants until the awarded funding has been used. Efforts are underway to persuade Congress to restore NHPRC funding. A joint task force of the Society of American Archivists, Council of State Historical Records Coordinators and National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators is urging researchers to fax letters to Congressional representatives. See http://www.archivists.org/news/nhprc-FY2006.asp for more information. Rootsweb Plus - A New Search Tool from Steve Morse
If any of you have done extensive lookups in the social security death index (SSDI), you'll know that there are several SSDI websites and each one has a different set of limitations. Several years ago Steve Morse made it easy for us by developing a single search form that could search any SSDI site that you specify. That way you could go back and forth between the different sites without having to reenter you data on a new form. Steve has now come up with a single search method that combines all the desirable features of the various sites. He did so by using the rootsweb site as his starting point and then wrote code to get rid of the following limitations in rootsweb ~ Rootsweb requires at least three characters for partial names ~ Rootsweb does not allow you to search on a range of years ~ Rootsweb does not allow you to search on age ~ Rootsweb does not allow you to search on a foreign last residence ~ Rootsweb does not allow you to specify day of month for death Steve calls his search method "RootsWeb Plus" and it is now the default choice on his SSDI search form. If you'd like to try it, go to Steve's site at http://www.stevemorse.org and select "Social Security Death Records" in his "Births and Deaths" section.

Military Ancestors & Naturalization Records
© Lorine McGinnis Schulze http://olivetreegenealogy.com/An 1862 law allowed honorably discharged Army veterans of any war to petition for naturalization, without having filed a declaration of intent, after only 1 year of residence in the United States. Variations of this special treatment continued throughout the years. The wording of the 1862 Act stated that any alien, age 21 or up "...who has enlisted, or may enlist in the armies of the United States...." It was designed to encourage enlistment during the Civil War. Aliens serving in the US military did not gain citizenship through service alone. The naturalization of soldiers was performed under certain provisions of nationality law facilitating thenaturalization of members of the US armed forces. These provisions waived the Declaration of Intention requirement and waived or reduced the residency requirement. Many soldiers filed petitions and were naturalized the same day. See SPECIAL CASES: Military at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ for more details Instead of naturalization "first papers", some courts filed military discharges. Sometimes you will have to consult separate military indexes but you should start looking in the usual places first. Military naturalizations were included in the WPA Project indexes. You can read about the WPA Project and naturalization indexes, and view an online one for all of Arkansas for 1809-1906, at Arkansas Naturalization Indexes If the naturalization took place in a Federal court, naturalization indexes, declarations of intent, and petitions will usually be in the NARA regional facility serving the State in which the Federal court is located. Some of these indexes and records have been microfilmed. Naturalization records from county courts may be at the county court, in a county or State archives, or at aregional archives serving several counties within a State. Some county court naturalization records have been donated to the National Archives and are available as National Archives microfilm publications. These are listed under the state in which they occurred, at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ Scroll down to the state list at the bottom of the page.

Battle Over Pioneer Cemetery in Southern Ontario
The City of Hamilton has declared the recently discovered Cooley Pioneer cemetery to be an "Unapproved Cemetery." The land owners want to relocate this cemetery for the purpose of development. Many of those buried are most likely Loyalists who settled in this part of Upper Canada (present day Ontario) after 1783. An archeology firm hired by the developers believes the cemetery might contain as many as 102 bodies, and dates from the late 1700s. Please see notice below: Re: Burial Site located at the Proposed Lime Kiln Road Subdivision, Part of Lots 48 & 49, Concession 2 and the Wildwood Estates 5 (Block 3, 62M-898), Part of Lot 48, Concession 2 (Formerly within the Township of Ancaster), City of Hamilton. (Physically located in a field off Rousseaux St. between Greenravine Dr. and Lime Kiln Rd.) Take notice that on November 30, 2004 a burial site at the above location was reported to the Registrar of the Cemeteris Act (Revised). An investigation conducted under the provisions of the Cemeteries Act (Revised) indicates the discovery of 99 distinct grave shafts. This early pioneer cemetery circa 1786-1824, now archaeologically known as the Cooley Cemetery, is likely the original cemetery for the Ancaster community. Members of the Cooley and Hatt families are known to be buried here. The Registrar hereby gives notice of the intention to declare the site to be an "Unapproved Cemetery," and invites representatives of persons whose remains are still interred to contact the Registrar in writing within two weeks after May 13, 2005. Dated at Toronto this 6th day of May 2005. Michael D'Mello Registrar, Cemeteries Act (Revised) Cemeteries Regulation Unit Ministry of Consumer and Business Services 250 Yonge Street, 32nd Floor Toronto, Ontario M5B 2N5 Telephone: 416-326-8393, Fax: 416-326-8406 Contact Michael D'Mello before May 27, 2005 if you object to this cemetery being declared an unapproved cemetery, and wish the graves to remain undisturbed Further Reading: HERITAGE CEMETERY HOLDS 100 BODIES Author: Daniel Nolan Source: Hamilton Spectator, The (ON); 27/11/2004 Descendants Face off with Developer By Daniel Nolan in The Hamilton Spectator
