Genealogy and How's New Format

Well, it's not really a new format. Somehow, someway, Blogger lost the page template for GAH. The template that I worked so hard on perfecting, just simply vanished, and was replaced by one of Blogger's default templates. That's why you're seeing the different colors and page design on GAH.

To make matters worse, I've come to discover that I don't have a backup copy of the template. Damn!!

However, THANK GOD FOR GOOGLE! They still have a cached copy of the webpage, and I was able to recover the template through them. Though, it is an HTML version of the template, as opposed to the XML version that Blogger users. I'll have to spend some time converting it.

But I just wanted to explain why you're seeing this funky blue page.

UPDATE: It's been about 40 minutes since I posted the above, and was able to get the old template restored. I had to convert Google's cached-copy of the page, which represented an HTML-rendered version of the template. The actual template has to be in a 50/50 XML & HTML version, which I spent the last several minutes converting to. Everything seems to look the way it used to be. Now, I'll just start keeping backup copies of Blogger templates!

Castle Garden Immigration WebSite to launch Aug. 1, 2005

The Battery Conservancy is preparing to launch CastleGarden.org on August 1, 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the immigrant depot at Castle Garden on August 1, 1855.

The electronic database project (with a database of 10 million names) is led by Dr. Ira Glazier, former Director of The Center for Migration Research at The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies and Immigration. CastleGarden.org will be a vital resource for the general public and for scholars interested in the history of immigration through the Port of New York.

Also see Castle Garden Ships Passenger Lists 1855-1890 online. More names of passengers on Ships to New York for other years can be viewed at Ships Passenger Lists to New York.

DNA Evidence suggests the Book of Mormon is incorrect

A book entitled, "Losing a Lost Tribe: Native Americans, DNA and the Mormon Church" by Simon Southerton, a former LDS Bishop, claims that the Book of Mormon is false in its teaching that Native Americans and Polynesians are descended from Israelites, citing DNA evidence as proof.

Southerton, who has since quit the Church, now faces excommunication.

What makes this interesting to me, is that this is a case of the LDS Church getting shot by its own gun. It was the LDS Church, through its own Brigham Young University, that perfected the use of DNA to validate claims of descendancies.

Kudos to GenealogyBlog.com for finding this first.

Old Maps of Tulare County, California

Art Source International is an online dealer in old maps. They have thousands, tens of thousands of old maps, some very useful towards researching family history, and other maybe not.

But for those of you who have ties to Tulare County, California, take heart! This place has tons of maps for you. They have maps of every township and range in Tulare County, depicting the names of landowners there. Not only can you find your ancestor's farm, but you can see what other family names you recognize in nearby farms. They also sell "bird's eye views" of farms and towns in Tulare County. Really cool stuff.

Try out their search engine located at the very top of the page. I entered in "riverside", which is the name of the county I live in. I got one result, for a plot map of "Riverside Cemetery", in St. Lawrence County, New York. Just goes to show what kind of odd-ball maps are available there.
