Map Your Ancestors
 A new genealogy service called " Map Your Ancestors" integrates with Google Maps to display your family's chronology, or your personal biography, on a map. Currently, you upload data via an Excel spreadsheet. The website provides templates. They are currently working on a method that allows you to upload a GEDCOM file. The new online tool is the creation of Phillip Olsen, who explained that education was what inspired him to build this... "I grew up in a family that was very active in genealogical work, however it took many years to really understand who my ancestors were and where they came from. Although I was told that some came from Denmark, others from Norway, etc., it never stuck with me. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I wanted to find a way to easily teach her about her ancestors." The website provides an example of President George W. Bush's ancestry all mapped out. Good news from Steve Morse! He has set up a OneStep Search Tool for the new CastleGarden.org website It's in the Castle Garden section of his website under the link "Castle Garden Passengers". There are two tools with that heading -- one that goes to the paid site Ancestry.com and the other that goes to the new CastleGarden.org site which is free. Some of things you can do from the one-step site that you can't do from castlegarden.org directly are: - You can specify all your parameters at one time. - You can search on year of birth. - You can search on the passengers age. - You can specify how you want your results sorted. - You can display more than 10 hits per page.

 MyFamily, Inc. announced the release of a newer edition of its popular family tree software, Family Tree Maker 2006 . New and improved features with 2006... - Improved searching and merging. Users can change web-search criteria in various ways without changing data in Family Tree Maker. Allows users to merge data from Ancestry.com records and images with any individual in their records and edit citation information before merging. In addition, all records stored in Family Tree Maker 2006 can be linked directly to the related source records on Ancestry.com.
- Improved Source Management. The new "Source Usage Report" allows users to view all sources associated with a single fact or person. Enhanced copy-and-paste feature allows users to connect a single citation to multiple facts. You can also quickly identify and replace duplicate master sources without losing any information.
- Streamlined Data Entry. The improved Edit Individual Box simplifies the process of entering basic information about a person from the Pedigree view. It also makes it easier for you to see related sources for that person. The Notes Field was expanded to hold up to 1Mb of text.

- Family Facts and Research Tips. Provides interesting and helpful research information about surnames, where ancestors are likely to have originated, surname meanings, and more. FTM also provides tips on which records to search for more information.

Online store helps Genealogist pay for research
 Perhaps this is just a sign of the times, as one family history researcher built an online store to help her pay the expenses of her research activities. Genealogy research is definitely not a "free hobby". Whether you're buying gasoline to drive to the archives, or requesting copies of death certificates, getting bit by the genealogy bug can put a hole in your pocket. But for Becky, the serious expense is travelling out of the country to do research. With places like Scotland, Ireland, and Newfoundland in her plans, the money she earns selling stuff on her e-commerce website will help her uncover more her family's past. Becky's store is called The Tangled Tree. She creates designs depicting genealogy-related images and phrases, and puts them on t-shirts, bags, hats, pillows, mousepads, and even doggie shirts. But she doesn't have to spend a lot of time operating the store, because a company called " CafePress" does much of the work for her. All she has to do is create the designs and upload them to CafePress. CafePress makes all the products, handles the orders, and ships them out. They even host the website, and helped her build it. Becky then receives a share of the sales profits. The best part is that didn't cost Becky anything to get her store started. CafePress offers a basic plan for free, or a premium plan costing only $60.00 a year. But what makes this great for a genealogist like Becky, is that it allows her to earn money, without taking up all her time. Each design she creates takes anywhere from a day to a week to create. Then she goes away and spends time on her research, while CafePress minds the store.
