Picnam Allows you to Create Text for Your Photos
Picnam is an interesting software tool for family historians that allows them to create text for their photos. You can scan an old family photo, and write up some descriptive text, and pair the two together. The text you write is not written on to the image, but rather into a separate text file. It's a standard text file that can read or edited by any text editor. What makes Picnam useful is that it coordinates the images and texts so that you can view both together in PicnamView, Picnam's separate viewing program. In fact, if you want to send photos and texts to someone else, you can include a copy of PicnamView. Picnam was originally conceived as a way to transcribe scanned images. Imagine scanning several U.S. Census pages, and then having to manually transcribe them. With Picnam, you can view a copy of the scanned image, and a copy of the text file, and do your transcription from one screen. Picnam costs $14.95, or you can try it free for 30 days.
