Steve Morse One Step Search Engine for Canada 1911 Census
Steve Morse has created another of his wonderful ONE STEP search engines -- this time it's for the 1911 Canadian census online at Ancestry.com Steve's search engine searches many fields, not just the surname. As well the district field is a dropdown list that is populated when you select the province. So there is no need for a separate district name and district number field as Ancestry has. Also there is no chance of mistyping or misspelling the district name when it comes for a dropdown list. You may want to try this new tool from Steve!

2% of Male New Yorkers Related
The hard science side of genealogy seems to be destined to get all the press for the forseeable future. &nbs; Reuters reports scientists from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland have found that as many as one in twelve Irish men are descended from "Niall of the Nine Hostages," a 5th-century warlord who was head of the most powerful dynasty in ancient Ireland. Persons sharing surnames originating from "Ui Neill" (descendants of Niall) have a higher frequency of sharing the Y chromosome identified with Niall. These include Bradley, Gallagher, Boyle, O'Donnell, O'Doherty and many others. Also, when international databases were checked, the chromosome turned up in roughly 2 percent of all male New Yorkers!

Almost Half Ashkenazi Jews Descend From 4 Women
According to Wikipedia, Ashkenazi Jews make up almost 80% of the entire world's jewry. Now a genetic study indicates that 40% of these descend from just four women. Those women apparently lived somewhere in Europe within the last 2,000 years, but not necessarily in the same place or even the same century. Each woman left a genetic signature that shows up in their descendants today according to a report published online by the American Journal of Human Genetics. Together, their four signatures appear in about 40 percent of Ashkenazi Jews, while being virtually absent in non-Jews and found only rarely in Jews of non-Ashkenazi origin. The study used mitochondrial DNA from more than 11,000 samples representing 67 populations. mitochondrial DNA is passed only from mother to daughter.

MemoryMiner - Geo/Photo Family History Software
A company called GroupSmarts has unveiled a new family history software for Macintosh computers (OSX v10.3 or higher), named " MemoryMiner". It allows you to enter people from your family, along with their photos, and enter lengthy notes and stories about them. You can even identify each of their relationships to you. If you recorded an interview with someone, you can attach the audio or video file to that person. MemoryMiner is heavily centered around Places to create geographic chronologies. It interfaces with online maps, such as Google Maps and MapQuest, allowing you to associate multiple places for each person, creating a timeline across the world. Imagine plotting out the travels of your grandfather, and attaching the photos he took of each location. But while MemoryMiner is indeed a family history application, it's not a true "family tree" software. It's really meant to create a presentation. You'd still want to keep your workhorse family tree software, but use MemoryMiner to translate all that genealogy data into an audio/visual biographical life story. MemoryMiner is available for download at for an limited-time introductory price of $45.00.

Ancient Ancestor of the Metrosexual Discovered
Archaeologists revealed today that the Clonycavan Man, a diminutive murder victim from the Iron Age discovered in an Irish peat bog, was found to have hair gel. The man, who was in his twenties, aristocratic and suffering from nits - was sporting a form of hair gel formulated from plant oil and pine resin, thought to be a device to make himself seem taller and more important. It is somehow rather poignant to think of him carefully applying his hair gel on the morning of his murder. The term "metrosexual" is used to describe a man who seems to spend more time on his appearance than the average man, to the point of being somewhat feminine.
