Winter Games Newspaper Archive Launched

NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the company that provides newspaper images and data to Ancestry.com, announced today that it has just released a new archive collection called WinterGamesArchive.com.

From the Games' debut in Chamonix, France, in 1924 to Salt Lake City in 2002, Winter Games Archive provides historic newspaper articles about timeless heroes like skater Peggy Fleming and lesser known athletes such as speed skater Charles Jewtraw. The site is the latest in a series of free archives containing thousands of original newspapers that include AbrahamLincolnArchive.com and MartinLutherKingJrArchive.com.

Some of the greatest athletic stories ever told can be found in the history of the Winter Olympics, including the "Miracle" victory of the 1980 U.S. Men's Hockey Team and the triumph of speed skater Dan Jansen. Yet, stories of deceit, greed and jealousy, as in the case of ice skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, are also detailed in the historic newspaper collection.

Along with the archive, the website contains a brief timeline on the Winter Games that is told through newspaper accounts. For example, an article from April 24, 1940, tells of Finland's announcement to cancel the 1940 Winter Games due to World War II.

Researchers interested in finding more information about the Winter Games can also go to NewspaperARCHIVE.com where there are more than 250,000 newspaper pages about the Winter Olympics. NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online, is owned by Heritage Microfilm and began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999.

Wisconsin Birth Index Launched (Pre-1907)

The Wisconsin Historical Society is pleased to announce its Pre-1907 Wisconsin Birth Index.

The index was made by digitizing a 1970's microfiche index and then expanding it with tens of thousands of delayed births, or births that were filed many years after the event, that were previously indexed separately. The result is free public access to more than 1,000,000 Wisconsin births, dating from the 1840s through 1907.

The index can be searched in a variety of ways - using just a last name or browsing by county and year. Users can try various names and locations to find Wisconsin ancestors. When an ancestor is found, a copy of the birth record can be ordered from the Wisconsin Historical Society online.

The Society plans to add pre-1907 death and marriage indexes in the next few months, creating a comprehensive vital records index that will be entirely free and publicly searchable. Until the death and marriage indexes are available, searches can be requested through our Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service.

New Genealogy Blog Launched at Interment.net

Interment.netInterment.net launched a new blog for those with an interest in family history and/or cemeteries.

The blog actually replaces a website feature called "Cemetery Column" that had published articles relating to cemeteries and family history. The new blog will actually continue the same purpose, but in a format and system that automates many of the manual processes with Cemetery Column.

Most of the articles published on Cemetery Column will eventually be republished in blog form, though the old article URLs will remain live.

Also, the blog itself sports the new page design that is being deployed across the entire website.

It's expected that with this new blog format and system, more articles will be published, more frequently.

This is not the first blog published on Interment.net. Last November, the website converted its "What's New" page into a blog as well. The What's New page posts summaries of all new transcriptions published that day. By putting it into a blog form, it automated the management of monthly archive pages, as well as the RSS feed, providing genealogists with a remote way to keep track of new additions to Interment.net.

World War I Soldiers' Death Records Now Online

1837 OnlineOver 700,000 British soldiers died in WWI, with one in eight soldiers never returning home. For frontline units, the casualties were as high as one in five.

Now a new searchable index on 1837Online has made it possible to search for those who died in World War I and discover online a soldier's place of birth, residence
and where they enlisted.

The online records will be able to help anybody interested in genealogy looking for a relative that died whilst serving for the British army in WWI. The indexes include every rank, from soldiers to lance corporals that served in the British army. It also details support staff, such as "nags men" and musicians, who usually enlisted as non-fighting men but sometimes became stretcher-bearers, facing the brutalities of the front line.

The amount of information held on each soldier varies, but a full entry will give...

  • Surname

  • Forenames

  • Initials

  • Place and country of birth

  • Place of enlistment

  • Place of residence

  • Rank

  • Army number

  • Regiment/Corps etc

  • Battalion etc

  • Date of death

  • How he died

  • Theatre of war

  • Supplementary notes, which include information such as former army numbers and regiments
